Woodblock 101: Learn to carve and print and take home a set of prints on archival paper. Relief printing is one of the oldest art-making processes, and the earliest means of making inexpensive multiples of images and words—a democratic art!

Learn to hone your carving skills and create and print a 4x6 woodblock. You will print on fine printmaking paper, card stock, fabric, and newsprint. These skills will enable you to make striking images for 2D art and textile design, as well as beautiful blocks (which can also be used for stamping onto 3D surfaces including wood and clay).

Please bring a 4x6 drawing in pen or pencil, or a photo/printed-out image that translates well to a black-and-white print (there is no grayscale in single-block woodblock printing- - only texture).

***This is the abridged version of the regular 3 hours class

materials fee of $15 to be paid to Jessie Merriam

Email Jessie at jessiemerriam@gmail.com with design ideas before the class for feedback if you would like! Templates available in the class will be simple designs that lend themselves to black and white printing and take advantage of the wood grain.
