Learn how to carve a spoon from a fresh cut tree using traditional Nordic carving techniques. We cover tree anatomy, axing out a blank (roughed out spoon shape), knife holds for the hook & sloyd knife, drying, and finishing. This class is great for the beginner or the person wanting to learn Sloyd style carving. The class fee includes tool rental, materials, a finishing kit, and safety gloves. Please wear pants and close toed shoes (even in your own home). Set up in a sweepable area, we are going to make some wood chips!
This course will be held over Zoom. It is limited to 12 people in order to offer more more interaction with peers and instructor. The zoom link will be emailed to students after signing up for the course.
This course has 3 free seats for the BIPOC (Black Indigenous People of Color) community to take this course at cost for the materials fee of $20. Fireweed believes in wealth re-distribution while our nation has still not offered proper reparations to marginalized communities. The course registration will be waived for individuals who identify as BIPOC.
Course materials include: spoon blank, straight knife & hook knife rental, finishing kit, and cut proof glove rental. Materials can be picked up/dropped off for local students at Jack's Hardware and Farm Supply in in Minneapolis. Out of state students will be given the option of requesting shipping and a return shipment envelope for an additional $19.00. (covers to & from priority shipping).
