This course is a pilot course combining woodblock carving with clay work. Join printmaker and ceramic artist Anika Hsiung Schneider (graduate of MCAD and employee of Minnesota Center for Book Arts) to carve patterns, shapes, and/or images into small woodblocks using traditional woodblock carving tools (familiar to you if you have taken any of Fireweed's Woodblock Printing 101 classes) and proofed on paper with ink before finalizing the design. Anika will assist students in using these blocks to stamp into clay. The clay can be formed into a variety of flatter forms including trivets or wall hangings.

Clay will be fired after the class by the instructors, and available for pick up at an announced time approximately 4 weeks after the class date. Woodblocks may be kept for future stamping and fabric/paper printing.
The class will run 5:00 pm - 9:30 pm with a 30/45 minute dinner in the middle. This is an in-person multimedia class (see COVID policy below).
There is one free seat for the BIPOC (Black Indigenous People of Color) community to take this course at cost for the materials fee of $26. Fireweed believes in wealth redistribution while our nation has still not offered proper reparations to marginalized communities. The course registration will be waived for individuals who identify as BIPOC.
The class will take place at the casket Art building in Northeast Minneapolis. GOOGLE MAP*USE THE SIDE DOOR ON 17th AVE . Use the black door labeled 681 in large white letters (on the 17th Ave side), go up two flights of stairs to the second floor, down the hall to the right (go to the end, studio 221 is on the left).
Please note that unfortunately, Casket Arts building is not ADA compliant as the building has an elevator but the entrance requires climbing stairs to the first floor to get to the elevator.
This class is limited to 7 individuals in order to offer more interaction with peers and instructor and to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
COVID policy for indoor classes:

Anika Hsiung Schneider is a narrative artist who draws on lived experiences, memory, and family history. With an Asian Mixed female identity, she resides in a highly racialized body that also exists in a liminal state. This connection to a liminal state of being closely connects her work to themes of loss, transitional spaces, and visualizing the intangible.
