Modify the traditional craft of basket weaving into a fashionable fanny pack. In this multi-day class, students will learn both weaving and leatherwork skills. Learn about the harvest and process of birch bark, as you try your hand at processing raw material into useable weavers to make the base pouch of your small pack. Students will design a template for the pouch flap, rivet buckles, and stitch leather before assembling their own unique woven fanny pack. No prior weaving experience is needed but students will need good hand strength and finger dexterity. Please let instructor know prior to class if you have any sensitivities to walnut oil.

Taught by Beth Homa Kraus

Beth Homa is a weaver, woodworker, and artist in south Minneapolis. After studying painting in college and working as a caseworker for people experiencing homelessness, they interned at North House Folk School in 2012 where Beth learned many traditional crafts including boat building, but mostly different styles of basketry. Beth says they contracted "weaver fever" and couldnt stop; this sparked an obsession with birch bark, which is now their main medium. Beth sustainably harvests and processes materials by hand and is always trying to figure out what they can make out of birch bark next and how to share this durable and beautiful material with people.
