The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is federal civil rights legislation passed in 1990. It addresses issues of accessibility within the United States in both the public and private sector. In this class, we will begin with an overview of the ADA focused on its implementation in our built environment. Next, we will execute an existing building ADA assessment of Fireweed Woodshop. Finally, with our new learning, we will put together recommendations and priorities for compliance within the shop space. All students will leave understanding the scope of the ADA as it applies in and around our buildings and how to assess existing buildings for compliance. This class is recommended for anyone interested in the work of updating Fireweed’s space (classes TBD) or anyone who owns a business with employees and/or public access as well as those who want to be more knowledgeable and better allies regarding accessibility.
