Identity, Gender, and Race
Fireweed typically offer several types of classes:
Classes for women and nonbinary students
Non-binary is a term for folks that are gender fluid and don't align with the male or female gender. People also use the term Gender Non-Conforming (GNC) or Two-Spirited (a Native term) to recognize folks beyond the binary.
Classes open to students of all genders
Classes for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) students
Classes open for students of all ethnic, racial identities
Some may wonder why Fireweed Community Woodshop has co-ed classes when our mission is to empower women and non-binary folks through the art of woodcraft. We also offer a variety of co-ed classes because men have different learning styles too! At Fireweed Community Woodshop there are no expectations of experience based on gender.
-
Minimum Age
Students must be 18 years of age or older to enroll in courses at Fireweed Community Woodshop, unless otherwise noted on the course page. For those under 18 interested in woodworking classes, we’d recommend checking out Leonardo's Basement.
-
Safe Attire
Students are asked to wear closed toed shoes, non-dangling clothing, and clothing you can get messy or covered in wood chips. Depending on your project or class, some students prefer to also tie up or cover their hair.
